We are all familiar to Asian-themed video slots. From Lucky 88 to whatever new release, we have all seen Chinese and Japanese cultural elements being incorporated to the slot universe. We are accustomed of dragons, Chinese traditional knots, koi fishes and all sorts of other elements.
Quickspin is a developing brand that we have heard little about. It has been on the market for only a few years and received mayor awards such as the EGR on 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Their high-quality visuals and innovation has made them a name among the industry’s most important developers, and both gamblers and operators have acknowledged their commitment to providing excellent gambling solutions.
However, there is nothing oriental about this game, at least at first glance. This 5-reel slot machine has a generic aural background with some rays of light converging into a smooth and peaceful background.
The symbols themselves are also very generic, featuring classic A, J, Q, K and 10, as well as also traditional gemstones from different colors.
The Setting of the Dragon Shrine is somewhat particular, since it works on a 3-4-4-4-3 row configuration. This is an increasingly common feature, and even as we were a little skeptical about it, we found it to work on our favor and we will tell you why.
The traditional letter and number symbols are the lowest paying symbols, while the dark blue, green and pink gems hold the highest value. In order to redeem a winning payline, you have to have three or more symbols of a kind in a winning disposition, starting with the leftmost reel.
The Dragon Symbol is probably the most Oriental thing found in this slot. Appearing only on reels 1 and 5, the gold dragon on a red background will show up in a stacked manner, and will trigger the Dragon Shrine Re-Spin feature, that will allow you to have 3 free re-spins with those Dragon symbols kept in place.
As for special features, there is also a Bonus symbol that, when appearing on three or more occasions on the reels, will award a pre-set number of free spins. There is also a basic Wild symbol that will substitute for other symbols while filling in the gaps that you need to fill in order to attain one of the 40 winning paylines.
What we love
We loved a lot of things about this game, but the thing we loved the most was the stacked Dragon symbol allowing you to get re-spins. Keep in mind that this feature can be triggered with stacked dragons on both the first and fifth reel, so you have a wide range of ways of winning.
The game has a very intuitive dynamic to it, and the gameplay is rather friendly. Once you’re set on the reels you will know exactly what to expect, and it takes only a couple spins to get the exact feeling of what this game is about.

As for the bet size, we were happy to see that –as it is the case with Quickspin products- the values are represented directly on your selected currency. The bet size ranges from as little as $/€0.20 all the way up to $/€800.00, and that is another thing that we appreciated, since it allows both low and high rollers to feel comfortable.
What we did not like
The game is, overall, quite dull. The theme is quite generic and it has only a few winks at the oriental culture that it is supposed to be inspired on.
Furthermore, wins with this game are not precisely frequent, meaning that you will only leave with a favorable balance if you’re too lucky.
Worth playing?
We liked Dragon Shrine, but it is definitely just another good looking slot with nothing much to offer.
The medium-to-high volatility and the low payouts might make it a complete waste of time, especially for those looking to walk out with a substantial amount on their total balance.
If you have the chance to try it out, you should do so, but trust us when we say that you will probably leave the slot feeling a little frustrated.
