Launched by WMS Gaming in 2018, Hula Hula Nights is this casino software provider’s take on Hawaii and Hawaiian culture. This is a pretty basic game in terms of design, look and feel, but it does come with a few nifty special features. Unfortunately, the game also comes with the Big Bet Bonus, which many players find off-putting, as it gives the impression that the developers have lowered your chances of success unless you wager extra.
This does appear to be the case, when one looks at the RTP rates in this game, which vary wildly depending on whether you have that costly Big Bet Mode activated or not.
How to play
Located below the reels of this game is potentially one of the simplest wagering menu bars you are likely to come across. Sure, the developers usually keep things simple in the wagering department in their games, but this is perhaps too simple for a slot which was only launched this year.

Big Bet Mode: Let’s talk about the elephant in the room first, since this ultimately ruins what could have amounted to a good game. Alternatively, you can (but probably won’t) wager $30 per spin or $50 per spin to get wild symbols substituting for scatters, and green reel “collect” icons, which we will discuss now.
Green Reel feature: Hula Hula Nights’ showcases some symbols which have a green backdrop. When these land on the reels, they will transform into a matching icon, and this can lead to winning combinations. Of course, with Big Bet Mode, each green reel symbol dishes out an instant cash prize which can be collected.
Wild symbols: These show up as the tiki masks, and they can substitute for all other symbols save for scatters – again, unless you happen to have Big Bet Mode activated, when they can then replace scatters.
Free spins bonus: Triggered by landing the Hula Hula Nights logo (the game’s scatter) on the reels, this bonus can offer you 10, 15 or 25 free games for 3, 4 or 5 respective scatter icons. It does certainly look as though WMS Gaming deliberately dropped the effectiveness of the features (and thus the RTP rate) on purpose, to make players wager Big Bets. This wouldn’t be so bad if the Big Bet Modes were affordable for all. Since they aren’t, we can’t really say too much positive about the game, which is nothing short of a disappointment, really.
