We were more than just a little excited when we found out earlier this year that our favorite novel developing house was about to release a sci-fi, 80s arcade concept slot. We had no idea what to expect, but we thought it was a very original and unique concept to work on.
Spectra, of course, was no disappointment. This retro futuristic slot is configured in a 5-reel, 4-row setting with 30 fixed paylines for gamblers to hit.
Spectra’s volatility is high, so it its amazingly suited for those risk-seeking gamblers that love to put their odds at challenge while spinning at the edge of their chairs.

Some of the icons featured in Spectra are quite simple, geometrical figures such as a circle, a square, a pentagon and a triangle, and these ones are the lowest paying ones.
Other traditional casino symbols such as bars and four-leafed clovers appear also in a revamped way consisting of a glowing outlining. These are the highest paying ones, and also the rarest. In a random play your chances of hitting a traditional symbol payline is very low.
What we loved
Spectra is a beautiful game. The overall aesthetic is very appealing, and the visuals were taken care of to the last detail. Everything in the graphic department is impeccable from beginning to end, and it all converges in a very harmonic layout.
The soundtrack is also very good. It is composed of melodies played with synths, and its beat gets faster and faster every time you hit a win or get a Wild symbol going on.
But the thing we loved the most was their unique, special feature. The Spectra logo includes a multicolored W, standing for the one and only special symbol: a Wild.
Before you get disappointed at the fact that such a simple layered game offers only one symbol, take into account that the Wild symbol alone operates in different ways, each one better than the other.

For instance, the Wild symbol only appears in groups of four Wilds, covering entire reels with the substituting feature. This increases your chances of hitting one or multiple paylines, so you are right to expect big cashouts if you’re lucky enough to get this feature going.
The Stacked Wild feature itself does not only substitute, but it triggers free spins. There is no Scatter symbol, and there is no need for it to be included, because the Stacked Wild covers up for it.
With every free spin, this Stacked Wild plus Scatter feature gets even more interesting, because if moves itself to the centermost reel. Thunderkick calls this a Nudge Wild feature, but we really don’t mind what its name is – we just love it!
What we did not like
Even as these special features mentioned above are so over-the-top fantastic, we have to admit that getting them is a very rare scenario.
The high volatility of this game plays against you, so you shouldn’t get too excited about Nudge Wilds and free spins, because chances are you will leave out with a thin wallet composed of small wins.
Worth playing?
As you can see, there are multiple special features all contained in one simple symbol. There is definitely more than meets the eye when betting with Spectra, and that is a very valuable characteristic in our opinion.
If you’re a risk-seeking gambler, we highly recommend you to try this out. It is not only visually nice, but very volatile and exciting. If, on the other hand, you’re more of a conservative, you might want to take it slow with Thunderkick’s Spectra.
